1984 Book Jacket

1984, the classic novel written by George Orwell, depicts a dystopian future in which a totalitarian government is constantly watching its subjects. To capture the book's ominous, psychological tone, I chose to focus on the theme of truth vs. fiction, playing with the way that reality is skewed in the novel. I staged a physical set comprised of multiple mirrors to express this sense of a distorted reality, where it is unclear what is real and what is fake. The reflections created by the mirrors evoke a sense of entrapment, claustrophobia, and surveillance, recalling the book's sinister prediction of a world without escape.
